Admission requirements in Federal Universities

To gain admission into any of the federal universities in Nigeria, you need to meet certain requirements. The basic requirements are five credits in not more than two sittings in WAEC/NECO/NABTEB including English Language and Mathematics. However, due to the competitive nature of admission into federal universities, meeting the minimum requirements may not guarantee you admission.

1. UTME Subjects

For most courses, you will be required to sit for the Use of English, Mathematics, and three relevant subjects in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The three relevant subjects must be in line with your chosen course of study. For example, if you intend to study Law, you may be required to sit for Use of English, Mathematics, Literature in English, Government and Christian Religious Knowledge. Ensure you check the subject requirements for your intended course before registering for the UTME.

2. Post-UTME Screening

Almost all federal universities conduct post-UTME screening exercises. The screening helps the schools assess candidates beyond just UTME scores. You may be required to sit for a written examination or an oral interview. Some schools have adopted the dual model where they conduct both written exams and oral interviews. At the post-UTME screening, you have the opportunity to prove yourself and increase your chances of gaining admission. So prepare well for this all-important stage.

3. Other Requirements

In addition to the basic entry requirements, some federal universities may ask for other credentials such as a minimum UTME score (for Medicine and Surgery, it is usually 200 and above), WAEC/NECO grades, and/or a pre-degree or remedial program certificate. A few universities also consider ‘O’ level grades, your course choices, catchment area, and/or state of origin during admission.
